When it comes to dieting, everyone has an opinion of what you should and shouldn’t eat, but how do we know what to believe? To help you out, we’ve gathered the seven worst dieting tips out there to explain why you SHOULDN'T be following this advice.
1. Fat Makes You Fat
This generalization is a bit dieting mistake. While fats in chips, cookies and greasy foods can increase cholesterol and your risk for certain diseases, good fats found in foods like nuts, avocado, salmon and olive oil protect your heart and support your overall health. These healthy fats also help weight loss as they reduce the inflammation that causes belly fat and help to keep you feeling full for longer.
2. Just Count Calories
The problem is again that this way of thinking is too general, as not all calories are equal. 100 calories of vegetables will boost your nutrition levels and health, and will keep you feeling full for longer than 100 calories of candy, which would actually increase hunger and cravings and provide you with nothing more than saturated fat and sugar. Candy and other foods without nutritional value are just empty calories, which should be avoided at all costs if you want to lose weight. So, while calories are great for understanding portion control, they’re not the only factor to consider in good nutrition.
3. Drink Your Fruit and Veg
While loading up your juicer with fruit and veg seems like a simple and efficient way to get your five a day, it comes at a cost. This is because juicing fruits and veggies removes one of their most valuable components – fiber. Found in the pulp, skin and seeds, fiber’s list of benefits ranges from filling you up to maintaining stable blood sugar levels so just drinking the juice won’t be as beneficial. Instead, go for smoothies with the pulp and skin intact so that you get more nutritional value in your glass. Or, better yet, eat your fruit and vegetables!
4. Don’t Eat Egg Yolks
Egg yolks have received a lot of bad press but it’s unjustified. A study from the University of Connecticut found that eating dietary cholesterol through egg yolks can actually boost a person’s HDL, or ‘good’ cholesterol. While egg whites offer nothing more than protein, the egg yolk contains 100% of the carotenoids, essentially fatty acids, vitamins A, E, D, and K that eggs contain as a whole. As we all know, lacking in these crucial vitamins can really slow down weight loss which is why we recommend that you add a great weight loss multivitamin to your breakfast eggs on toast. The egg yolks also contain choline, which boost brain and liver health, reduces inflammation, and is known to help the absorption of fat. Eggs are often cited as the perfect food as they’re versatile, cheap and great for your health and weight loss, so eating them yolks and all, and in moderation, is a healthy option.
5. Say No to Nuts
It’s true that nuts are calorie dense, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t be easily incorporated into a healthy diet when eaten in controlled portions. Nuts are a great provider of healthy fats and are one of the best snack foods around for their nutritional value. A study in the Journal of The American College of Nutrition backs this up, as researchers found that nut consumers had a lower BMI and smaller waist than non-consumers. In fact, like eggs, nuts are one of the healthiest 'bad' foods you should be eating!
6. Sugary Fruit Causes Fat
The sugar in fruit is unprocessed and in its most natural state, so it cannot be blamed for making you fat. Cutting fruit out of your diet because of this fear of sugar means that you will end up missing out on the great fiber content that fruit offers. Fiber keeps you full – for example, eating an apple keeps hunger at bay for up to 2 hours – and the many nutrients in fruit nourish your body, which far outweighs the concern of natural sugar. 7. You Should Detox
Detoxing is one of the biggest dieting myths out there, and not only is it completely unnecessary for good health and weight loss, it could actually do more harm than good. Your digestive system, including your kidneys and liver, are actually great at ‘detoxing’ your body on a regular basis without you interfering. What’s more, detoxing often means not consuming many calories which can then slow your metabolism and hinder weight loss, so give the green juice a miss and just continue eating a healthy balanced diet.
While these terrible tips should be avoided if you want to lose weight and get healthy, one weight loss tip you should never ignore is how much a great weight loss supplement can help you to achieve your weight loss goals. With your appetite and cravings under control and the boost of energy you need to get active, you’ll be on the right track to success in no time!
